PRPD Update #3

A while back I wrote a piece on Articulating Value during pledge drives. The point was that we are often better at selling listeners premiums than on the value of the station. Today, Ira Glass was the keynote speaker at the PRPD Conference. He spoke on creativity in public radio. It should be required listening for anyone who has to go on the radio and ask for money.

Two questions, John:

First, any place we can hear Ira's speech, or read a transcript of it? I'd be very interested to hear what Ira's got to say but I couldn't make it to PRPD.

Second, did Ira (or does anyone) have any examples of stations that are successfully "selling the value" of their station during fundraisers? Large or small?

P.S. This isn't a "devil's advocate" or mocking Ira's coffee-cup-of-doom fundraiser pitches. It's just that you've dangled a potentially VERY juicy bit of info and now I'm very hungry for more details!! :-)

Aaron -- I think the PRPD will have Ira's session on the member's section of its web site sometime soon. So you will have to access it through a PRPD member. I don't know if they will charge for it or not.
